LDPE and HDPE Gaskets

Extreme Toughness Make LDPE and HDPE an Excellent Material Choice

LDPE and HDPE are polyethylene plastics, characterized by their minimal moisture absorption, extreme strength, and resistance to chemicals. There are two different classes of polyethylene plastics, low density (LDPE) and high density (HDPE). They are classified by their differences in:

  • Heat resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • Rigidity

Kelcut manufactures both LDPE and HDPE plastic gaskets for a wide assortment of industries and applications. They are most commonly used for packaging purposes.

  LDPE Gasket Material Specifications
Material Low-Density Polyethylene
Tensile Strength In the 1100-1700 PSI range
Uses Film applications, power cables and prosthetic devices, and corrosive applications
  HDPE Gasket Material Specifications
Material High-Density Polyethylene
Tensile Strength In the 3000 PSI range
Uses Injection molding and blow molding applications; applications where corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, and impact resistance are required

Die Cut Manufacturing

Low-Density Polyethylene

There are many benefits of using low-density polyethylene for gasket manufacturing, such as high tear resistance, moisture resistance, strength, and elasticity. LDPE is used in a variety of plastic applications and tends to have less stiffness than HDPE. LDPE is material often used in power cables, plastic 6-pack rings and children’s toys.

Advantages of LDPE

  • Low cost
  • Moisture and chemical resistant
  • Food-grade

Limitations of LDPE

  • Flammable
  • Difficult to bond
  • Subject to cracking

High-Density Polyethylene

Kelcut manufactures top-quality high-density polyethylene gaskets and seals. HDPE is most commonly used in blow molding (forming hollow plastic parts) and injection applications and features extreme toughness and strength while remaining rigid. HDPE can withstand higher temperatures than LDPE.

Advantages of HDPE

  • Low cost
  • Moisture and chemical resistance
  • Food-grade

Limitations of HDPE

  • Not weather resistant
  • Poor temperature capability
  • Flammable
